Eni and BMW Group: an agreement for Enilive HVO diesel biofuel to power corporate fleets
Eni and BMW Group will supply corporate fleets in Italy, Germany, and Austria with Enilive’s HVOlution diesel biofuel, a 100% renewable fuel reducing CO₂eq emissions by 79.5% compared to fossil diesel.
Eni and BMW Group have agreed to power BMW corporate fleets in Italy, Germany, and Austria with Enilive’s HVOlution, a diesel biofuel made entirely from renewable feedstocks. The fuel, produced by Enilive—Eni’s sustainable mobility division—offers an immediate way to cut emissions in road transport, with a 79.5% CO₂eq reduction across its supply chain in 2025 compared to fossil diesel. BMW Group views pure HVO as a key solution for transitioning corporate fleets to lower-emission fuels while maintaining operational efficiency.
BMW Group is testing and developing pure HVO-powered fleets, implementing a system to track fuel usage by comparing vehicle refueling data with fleet operators’ payment records. This ensures transparent traceability of the biofuel used. The initiative aligns with BMW’s broader strategy to reduce CO₂eq emissions across its value chain, complementing its existing powertrain technologies. The agreement follows BMW Italia’s collaboration with Eni to promote sustainable mobility solutions in Italy.
Under the European fuel standard EN 15940, BMW Group has approved HVO diesel fuels for its Diesel models registered from late 2014 onward, provided they are equipped with a Generation B diesel engine. To encourage adoption, BMW Italia is offering an Enilive HVOlution voucher to customers purchasing new BMW diesel vehicles in Italy. The partnership reflects BMW Group’s commitment to leveraging all available technologies to achieve emissions reductions in transport.
Stefano Ballista, CEO of Enilive, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, noting that Enilive’s biorefineries in Venice and Gela process waste and residues like used cooking oil and animal fats to produce HVO biofuels. As a drop-in fuel, pure HVO requires no engine or infrastructure modifications, making it a practical solution for decarbonizing transport. Dr. Martin Kaufmann, SVP Powertrain Development at BMW Group, emphasized the dual benefits of the partnership, including Eni’s use of BMW vehicles in its corporate fleet and Enilive’s role in advancing renewable fuels in Europe.
