CISA Hosts Cyber Storm X, Nationwide Cybersecurity Exercise to Strengthen Resilience

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) hosted Cyber Storm X, a four-day national cybersecurity exercise designed to assess and improve the nation’s resilience against cyber threats. This year’s event, the tenth in the series over 20 years, included 2,000 participants from government and private sectors, focusing on critical infrastructure sectors such as water, energy, transportation, and ports. The exercise simulated a major cyber incident to evaluate response plans and coordination mechanisms in a controlled environment.

Acting CISA Director Nick Andersen emphasized the exercise’s role in preparing for large-scale cyber incidents, stating that it ensures plans, policies, and partnerships are ready for real-world threats. The scenario involved a nation-state adversary targeting transportation systems, including rail and ports, as well as water and wastewater systems. Participants practiced response strategies, information sharing, and coordination to enhance preparedness.

Cyber Storm X engaged over 200 organizations across all levels of government and the private sector, providing a platform to test and refine incident response procedures. The exercise allowed participants to identify gaps and improve collaboration in a simulated crisis, reinforcing national cyber resilience. CISA will now analyze the exercise outcomes to produce a public after-action report with observations and recommendations.

Following the exercise, CISA will collaborate with participating organizations to extract lessons learned and integrate findings into national cybersecurity strategies.
