Announcing Cloudflare Ambassadors, Community Engineers, and another $1M in open-source funding
Cloudflare unveiled an expanded community program featuring Ambassadors and Community Engineers, alongside an additional $1M in open-source funding to support developers and maintainers.
Cloudflare introduced a restructured community initiative to better support contributors who educate, build, and maintain tools across its ecosystem. The program includes two tracks: Ambassadors, selected annually, will receive resources to organize events, create content, and lead local developer communities for up to two years. Applications are open until September 6, with selections announced by October 5. Ambassadors will receive credits, marketing assets, and visibility in Cloudflare’s online spaces, including Discord.
The Ambassador role emphasizes grassroots engagement, such as hosting hackathons, workshops, or tutorials, and serving as a point of contact for developers exploring Cloudflare’s platform. Sruthi Pereddy, a University of Michigan student and Cloudflare intern, exemplifies the program’s goals by advocating for Cloudflare as a developer platform among peers. The initiative aims to bridge resource gaps for students and early-career developers seeking infrastructure to prototype ideas.
Cloudflare also launched the Community Engineer program, committing an additional $1M over two years to fund open-source maintainers working on projects aligned with its ecosystem, such as Astro, Hono, and Vinext. Unlike the Ambassador program, Community Engineer grants have no fixed term, recognizing that open-source work often requires long-term or opportunistic support. Selected engineers will receive grants and a designated role in Cloudflare’s Discord server, fostering collaboration and visibility within the developer community.
To sustain its growing Discord server, which now hosts nearly 100,000 users, Cloudflare formed a committee including Ambassadors and staff to maintain community health. The committee will focus on moderation and growth, leveraging automated tools to reduce spam and malicious links. This effort reflects Cloudflare’s broader commitment to supporting the infrastructure and people who shape the internet’s future through open collaboration and education.
