Cloudflare announced that its government-focused service, Cloudflare for Government, has achieved FedRAMP High certification, the most rigorous security authorization for cloud services used by U.S. federal agencies. The certification, sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, validates Cloudflare’s ability to secure national security data, critical infrastructure, and citizen information. This milestone follows the company’s earlier FedRAMP Moderate authorization in 2022, representing a significant upgrade in compliance and security controls. The achievement underscores Cloudflare’s commitment to providing government agencies with enterprise-grade technology without compromising on modern features or performance.

FedRAMP High certification requires stringent data residency and handling controls, which Cloudflare addressed through its Data Localization Suite. This suite enables precise, software-defined management of data processing and storage, ensuring all traffic inspection and processing occurs exclusively within U.S. data centers for FedRAMP High services. The certification allows federal agencies to access the same advanced technologies as Cloudflare’s top enterprise customers, including Zero Trust security tools, high-performance applications, and developer features. This eliminates the need for agencies to rely on outdated, isolated government clouds that lag behind commercial innovation.

Cloudflare’s architectural approach differs from traditional methods, which often involve creating separate, pared-down versions of commercial platforms for government use. Instead, Cloudflare operates a single global network with a uniform software stack across all data centers. The FedRAMP High offering is built on this same infrastructure, ensuring consistency and eliminating technology silos. This design choice enables agencies to benefit from the latest advancements without sacrificing security or compliance. The company’s investment in FedRAMP High aligns with its broader mission to build a more secure and innovative internet, particularly for critical applications.

The certification also positions Cloudflare to pursue U.S. Department of Defense Impact Level 4 (DoD IL4) authorization, a cybersecurity standard for systems handling controlled, unclassified data. By leveraging the same systems developed for FedRAMP High, Cloudflare aims to accelerate innovation in the defense community, reducing constraints imposed by isolated government clouds. The company collaborates with multiple U.S. government agencies, including the Department of State and the Department of Commerce, to enhance their digital security and resilience.
