How NorthStar Anesthesia built a scheduling app for a workforce of 3,000 clinicians in weeks
NorthStar Anesthesia deployed a mobile scheduling app in weeks to replace a commercial platform that obscured clinicians’ time-off data, improving usability for 3,000 rotating physicians and CRNAs across 25 states.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
NorthStar Anesthesia, which staffs anesthesia services across more than 25 U.S. states using roughly 3,000 clinicians, faced scheduling inefficiencies after adopting a new commercial platform that deliberately hid colleagues’ time-off data. Clinicians, who rely on phones between cases due to limited computer access, struggled to coordinate shifts and time off. The company and partner Synaptiq had already unified scheduling, time tracking, and contract data on Databricks, but the initial dashboard approach failed to meet end-user needs.
Synaptiq pivoted to a mobile app after a pilot dashboard proved unusable on phones, citing poor mobile friendliness as the core issue. The team leveraged existing Databricks infrastructure, including governance and Microsoft Entra ID SSO, to deploy a React TypeScript app via Databricks Apps in weeks. The app features color-coded shift views, facility selectors, calendar modes, shift notes, and real-time refreshes every 30 minutes, while exposing previously hidden time-off data.
Built by a single software engineer, the app launched within weeks and rapidly iterated based on user feedback. Daily active users grew from 75–80 at launch to over 110 as clinicians adopted the platform. NorthStar’s CTO, Dan Levine, noted the app resolved a major pain point, while clinicians reported reduced stress and improved workflow efficiency.
The project highlights how healthcare teams are using Databricks to build custom applications that address specific operational gaps. NorthStar’s experience demonstrates the platform’s ability to accelerate development cycles and deliver targeted solutions without requiring new infrastructure.
