MTG-I2 ready for launch on Ariane 6
Europe’s Meteosat Third Generation Imager-2 satellite is encapsulated atop an Ariane 6 rocket for launch on 27 August from French Guiana, marking the ninth flight of the heavy-lift launcher.
The Meteosat Third Generation Imager-2 satellite (MTG-I2) has been placed inside the Ariane 6 payload fairing at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana ahead of a scheduled launch on 27 August. The encapsulation involved lowering the fairing’s two joined halves over the satellite before the upper segment was mounted atop the rocket, which stands vertically on the launch pad inside the Mobile Gantry. The gantry will be retracted just before liftoff, leaving the launcher and satellite ready for final countdown procedures.
MTG-I2 will join the first family of Meteosat Third Generation satellites, enhancing weather forecasting across Europe and northern Africa with higher-quality, more frequent data. The satellite will deliver high-resolution atmospheric images every 2.5 minutes, enabling earlier warnings for severe weather events such as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. This improved precision and timeliness will support emergency services, public authorities, and citizens in preparing for extreme conditions.
The mission’s economic impact includes better protection for sectors reliant on weather conditions, including agriculture, transport, insurance, tourism, infrastructure, and energy networks. MTG-I2’s data will help mitigate risks and improve operational planning in these industries by providing more accurate and timely weather predictions.
This launch will be the ninth flight of Europe’s Ariane 6 rocket, configured with two P120C solid-propellant boosters to carry MTG-I2 to a geostationary transfer orbit. It represents the first mission to this destination for Ariane 6 and the rocket’s farthest flight to date. ESA oversees the Ariane 6 program, while Arianespace provides launch services for flight VA270. The MTG satellites were developed by ESA and built by a European consortium led by Thales Alenia Space, with OHB System and Leonardo as key partners. Eumetsat will operate the satellites and distribute the scientific data after commissioning.
