Roblox confirms no adult content used in AI training after scraping Open3DLab data
Roblox confirms an AI agent scraped 145.5 GB of content, including adult material from Open3DLab and its subsidiaries, but states the data will not be used for AI training and the agent has been decommissioned.
Roblox Corporation has acknowledged that one of its AI agents scraped 145.5 GB of content from Open3DLab and its adult-focused subsidiaries, Smutlab and SFMLab. The company confirmed the incident after Open3DLab publicly alleged unauthorized data collection, including adult content. A Roblox spokesperson stated the AI agent was decommissioned and the collected data will not be used for any purpose, including AI model training. The company also noted it is strengthening safeguards for future AI agent deployments.
The AI agent, identified as a Roblox researcher's creation, operated from October 18 to 19 and downloaded 1,027 files from 712 projects across the three sites. According to Open3DLab's admin 'Salaryman,' the bot ignored the sites' robots.txt instructions and Terms of Service, which prohibit scraping. The agent also disregarded creators' non-commercial licenses, including models based on intellectual property from Shift Up's Stellar Blade and Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch.
Open3DLab detected the crawler on October 18 and blocked its access, but the agent resumed scraping the following day. Salaryman identified the bot's creator as a Roblox researcher and author of the company's core generative AI system, 'Cube.' The agent's data indicated it was gathering models for AI dataset training, raising concerns that adult content could inadvertently be included in Roblox's generative AI tools.
Roblox's incident follows ongoing scrutiny over its moderation of sexualized content and child safety. Despite recent moderation improvements in 2026, the company faces litigation from government entities and parents alleging it enabled exploitation of minors. Roblox has denied these claims, while CEO David Baszucki has faced criticism over his public statements on child safety.
