SAG-AFTRA launches new video game agreement enabling devs to hire professional actors for demos and vertical slices
SAG-AFTRA launched a new video game agreement enabling developers to hire professional actors for early-stage demos and prototypes, provided projects meet specific funding and release criteria.
SAG-AFTRA has introduced the Pre-Funding Pitch Interactive Media Agreement, allowing developers to hire professional actors for demos, vertical slices, trailers, and prototypes before securing full funding. The agreement targets projects that have not yet secured more than 30% of initial production funding or appear complete. Projects released through crowdfunding or already commercially available are excluded from eligibility under this agreement.
The union clarified that developers may request a waiver if a project partially meets the requirements, though approval is not guaranteed. The agreement aims to streamline the hiring process for union talent, providing developers with a competitive advantage in securing funding and industry support. SAG-AFTRA emphasized the importance of professional performance in enhancing project quality and appeal.
SAG-AFTRA national executive director and CEO Duncan Crabtree-Ireland stated the agreement helps developers gain an edge in a highly competitive industry by enabling early access to professional talent. The union highlighted the agreement's role in improving project quality and increasing the likelihood of securing necessary funding and backing.
The announcement follows SAG-AFTRA's 11-month strike between 2024 and 2025, which ended after negotiations with publishers and developers on compensation, AI regulation, and safety. The union previously introduced agreements for student collaborations and game jams during the strike, later establishing the Interactive Media Agreement with pay increases, health contributions, and AI safety measures.
