AI in Indian Education: Atal Innovation Mission and Google launch ATL Saathi — Google DeepMind

Atal Innovation Mission’s ATL program, reaching over 1.1 crore students, is expanding its focus from lab access to measurable learning outcomes. Google DeepMind announced at the AI Impact Summit in February 2026 plans to integrate robotics, coding, and AI tools like Gemini into teacher workflows. The initiative aims to create a safely guardrailed AI assistant aligned with national curriculum standards, serving as an educational partner for students and educators alike.

ATL Saathi, a live pilot web application powered by Gemini, is now available to 100 schools. Designed as a 24/7 planning and training assistant for educators, it transforms traditional tinkering labs into AI-augmented discovery environments. The tool organizes training modules in NotebookLM, offering summarized content, AI-generated infographics, video overviews, and interactive quizzes for 12 core curriculum modules, enabling micro-learning for teachers.

The assistant supports educators in their preferred language, starting with eight vernacular options, and provides project generation tools for 10 core modules. It generates grade-appropriate, curriculum-aligned project ideas with step-by-step instructions, wiring diagrams, and safety precautions. This reduces administrative burdens on teachers, allowing them to focus on mentoring and innovation in the classroom.

Google DeepMind has collaborated with Atal Innovation Mission, part of NITI Aayog, to ensure ATL Saathi aligns with educational principles and pedagogy. The pilot phase targets 100 schools, aiming to improve teacher efficiency and comfort with AI tools. The initiative reflects a broader effort to strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem by empowering educators with accessible, contextual support.
