Introducing Google Cloud Modernize, transforming for (and with) AI
Google Cloud launches Modernize, an AI-powered portfolio unifying migration tools to accelerate enterprise infrastructure and application upgrades with new compute options and automated Kubernetes migration.
Google Cloud Modernize consolidates existing migration and modernization tools—including Migration Center, VMware Engine, Mainframe Modernization, and the new EKS-to-GKE Migration Agent—into a single portfolio designed to shorten multi-year transformation timelines. The initiative introduces Modernization Hub, an in-console interface enabling developers to analyze Java, .NET, and mainframe source code, map dependencies, and accelerate modernization workflows. New agentic capabilities in Migration Center use Gemini to convert VMware inventory exports into TCO projections, allowing teams to model infrastructure costs interactively and validate assumptions in real time.
The portfolio adds purpose-built compute options for high-throughput workloads, including the X5 Series for SAP S/4HANA at scale with 43 TiB memory configurations, the M4N Series for core-optimized database performance with 26.57 GiB RAM per vCPU, and ultra-low latency data engines Z4D and Z4M offering up to 168,000 GiB of local NVMe SSD and 400 Gbps networking. These options address I/O bottlenecks encountered by real-time AI agents querying backend systems and large-scale data pipelines.
For VMware estates requiring cloud elasticity without immediate re-architecture, Google Cloud offers a self-managed VMware solution on Bare Metal Z3 shapes with VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1, enabling native global VPC links to Compute Engine, GKE, BigQuery, and Gemini Enterprise. The new EKS-to-GKE Agentic Migration in public preview automates discovery, manifest translation, and network mapping from AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service to GKE with enterprise-grade security and GitOps compliance.
Modernization Hub integrates the App Modernization CLI (CodMod), which uses Gemini to analyze legacy .NET Framework applications, map hidden dependencies, and generate modernization recommendations for migration to .NET Core on Linux containers. Mainframe modernization tools include the Mainframe Assessment Tool, Dual Run for transaction replay validation, and the Mainframe Connector for direct data migration to Google Cloud services, as demonstrated by Intesa Sanpaolo’s core banking transformation.
