Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks

Google is introducing skills in Gemini to replace Gems, enabling users to save and reuse instructions for repetitive tasks. Skills allow users to create custom commands that can be triggered by typing a forward slash followed by the skill’s name, streamlining workflows without repetitive prompting. The feature is already available in Gemini Spark and will soon expand to Google Workspace customers, including business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education sectors, over the coming weeks.

Users can build skills from existing chats and combine multiple skills for complex tasks, such as merging writing style and brand guidelines to generate on-brand content. Skills can also incorporate reference files like text documents, PDFs, or images, enhancing their utility for tailored workflows. The ability to share skills and add files from Google Drive or Gemini Notebooks will be available in the coming weeks, mirroring features previously offered in Gems.

Google will phase out Gems in stages, starting with personal accounts in November, followed by Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit customers in March 2027, and education customers in June 2027. During this transition, users’ Gems will be automatically migrated to skills to ensure continuity, though the Opal experiment for mini apps will be discontinued in November.

The migration process includes guidance from Google’s help center to assist users in transitioning their Gems to skills. Skills will be available across all Google AI subscription tiers, with access currently granted to users aged 18 and older, and expanding to under-18 users in the future. Gems by Google Labs will also be discontinued without migration to skills.
