Modernizing Unstructured Data Workflows: Alteryx Live Query meets Google Cloud BigQuery
Alteryx Live Query and Google Cloud BigQuery integrate to automate unstructured data workflows, enabling direct processing within BigQuery for improved efficiency and governance.
Alteryx One Live Query and Google Cloud BigQuery now allow enterprises to process complex, unstructured data without moving it outside the warehouse, reducing reliance on disconnected tools. The browser-based Live Query environment lets business users build data pipelines visually, without coding, while BigQuery executes transformations directly within the warehouse. This integration supports document-heavy workflows by leveraging AI models like Gemini for extraction from PDFs and images, all while maintaining BigQuery’s data governance and security standards.
Finance teams often struggle with manual extraction from vendor invoices in PDF format, where inconsistent data formats and high error risks slow processes. The new integration automates the entire invoice lifecycle by processing PDFs, extracting key fields, and standardizing results directly within BigQuery. This approach accelerates exception identification, such as anomalies or data mismatches, while ensuring governed enterprise data remains secure and resident in the warehouse under BigQuery’s fine-grained access policies.
The Live Query workflow begins by ingesting invoice PDFs stored in Google Cloud Storage, where file metadata is captured for reliable downstream processing. Using Alteryx’s Document Extract tool, structured fields are extracted via user-selected models like Gemini or Document AI, with results written back into BigQuery for standardization and reconciliation. The workflow then classifies extracted content into business categories and normalizes data to prevent duplicates during reconciliation against historical records.
At enterprise scale, the architecture separates workflow authoring in the browser from execution in BigQuery, ensuring warehouse-scale processing and governed data handling. Alteryx One Platform Services coordinate execution planning and traceability, while BigQuery serves as the governed data and execution layer. This design allows for secure SQL pushdown, AI-backed extraction, and automated reconciliation, reducing manual intervention and improving auditability across millions of documents.
