New Vanguard charter school to offer military-ethos education to Kiwi students
A new charter school in Auckland’s North Shore will open in 2025, offering military-style education for Years 7 to 10 students, led by the team behind Vanguard Military School.
Associate Education Minister David Seymour announced Vanguard Prep School will open in Term 1 next year on Auckland’s North Shore, catering to students in Years 7 to 10. The school aims to provide an alternative education pathway with a focus on discipline, leadership, and academic achievement. Seymour highlighted the school’s military ethos, including morning parades and structured daily routines. The initiative follows the closure of the previous charter school programme by the Labour government.
The school will operate under the same funding model as state schools but with greater flexibility and stricter accountability for results. Students, referred to as recruits, will participate in small academic classes and afternoon activities such as physical training and team challenges. Each student will be part of a section of around 20 peers led by a dedicated teacher. The model is designed to build self-discipline and teamwork while preparing students for secondary school.
Vanguard Prep School is led by the team behind Vanguard Military School, which previously operated a successful charter school under the former programme. Seymour emphasized the team’s proven ability to engage young people and support their success. The new school targets younger students to instill strong habits and self-belief early in their education journey.
The government’s approach to charter schools prioritizes community-driven ideas while maintaining strict accountability. Seymour stated that the model combines state school funding with flexibility and results-based oversight to drive student success. The school will offer families an education option centered on structure, high expectations, and academic excellence.
