Regional radio strengthened for emergencies
The New Zealand Government is funding backup generators and infrastructure for 10 regional radio stations to maintain emergency communications when power or telecommunications fail.
The Government will provide $300,000 from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to install backup generators and related infrastructure at 10 independently owned regional radio stations across New Zealand. The funding aims to ensure communities retain access to critical emergency information when electricity, internet or telecommunications services are disrupted. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones highlighted the vital role regional radio plays in keeping communities informed during crises.
Emergency Management and Recovery Minister Mark Mitchell stated that reliable communication in regional areas is essential during emergencies. The Regional Emergency Broadcasting programme complements Radio New Zealand’s nationwide emergency radio network, providing an additional layer of dependable information delivery when other networks fail.
The funding will cover backup generation capability, electrical works, fuel storage, site preparation, testing and commissioning at each station. The Independent Media Association will coordinate the project in partnership with participating regional broadcasters to ensure efficient implementation.
An additional $20,000 in co-funding will support project delivery, bringing total investment to $320,000. The initiative is designed to strengthen the resilience of regional radio infrastructure, enabling stations to continue broadcasting during power outages or telecommunications disruptions.
