Supporting independent journalism in Ukraine
OpenAI, WAN-IFRA, and AIRPPU launched a joint initiative to bolster Ukraine’s independent news sector through AI training and pilot projects, addressing sustainability amid conflict.
OpenAI, WAN-IFRA, and AIRPPU announced a new initiative on September 7, 2026, to support Ukrainian news publishers by building AI capabilities and accelerating innovation during ongoing conflict. The program, developed in partnership with the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU), aims to strengthen independent journalism through practical AI adoption. The initiative includes the Newsroom AI Masterclass Series and the Newsroom AI Catalyst, designed to address editorial workflows, audience engagement, and revenue generation challenges faced by news organizations.
The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series, launched on August 5, 2026, brings together international experts to share case studies and implementation strategies with Ukrainian newsrooms. Topics cover critical priorities such as product development, organizational change, and responsible AI adoption, building on prior collaborations between WAN-IFRA and OpenAI. The series provides a platform for peer learning and knowledge exchange to enhance newsroom resilience and efficiency.
The Newsroom AI Catalyst, set to begin on September 17, 2026, will offer hands-on support to ten participating Ukrainian news organizations. Participants will identify high-impact AI use cases, develop implementation roadmaps, and pilot tailored AI-enabled solutions. Each organization will receive credits to OpenAI’s API to facilitate the development of customized newsroom tools and workflows.
The initiative builds on WAN-IFRA’s global work supporting AI adoption in news organizations, including leadership programs and industry research. AIRPPU, representing Ukraine’s largest network of independent regional publishers, will lead local implementation with emergency support and innovation initiatives.
