A former Microsoft engineer disclosed that the infamous 'FCKGW' Windows XP key likely leaked from an OEM partner with early access, enabling widespread piracy before launch.
David Plummer, a former Microsoft engineer, revealed he authored Windows XP's Product Activation system and identified the infamous 'FCKGW' key as a leaked Volume License Key (VLK). The key, FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8, was embedded in pirated copies distributed before the OS's official release. Plummer suggested the leak originated from an OEM or hardware partner with early access to final media, such as Dell or Intel, which had the necessary VLKs to validate corporate installations.
Plummer explained that Windows Product Activation required a valid key and a secret 10 MB 'binary blob'—an encrypted version of Microsoft Bob—present only on Volume Media discs. The system would verify the blob to confirm legitimacy, but pirates bypassed this by using the leaked FCKGW key with Volume Media copies. Devils0wn, a piracy group, posted a complete Windows XP Pro Corporate ISO five weeks before launch, alongside the key, allowing seemingly legitimate installations.
Microsoft responded by blacklisting leaked keys in Service Pack 1 and strengthening checks in Service Pack 2, which blocked updates for installations using the FCKGW key. Despite these measures, valid un-leaked VLKs continued to function with Volume Media versions for years. Plummer attributed the failure to the premature public release of both the media and the key, which prevented the hardware-binding feature of Windows Product Activation from taking effect.
Plummer noted that no functional keygen for Windows XP was ever discovered, and many available tools likely reused leaked VLKs. He emphasized that the operational failure stemmed from the early leakage of both the media and the key, which undermined the activation system's integrity before it could be fully implemented.
