FF14's new roguelike mode's leaderboards were accidentally encouraging players to min-max all the fun out of it, so it'll be 'postponing the start of Crucible R
Square Enix has delayed the Crucible of the Unbroken’s leaderboard season after players exploited scoring mechanics to min-max results, undermining the mode’s intended design.
Square Enix announced it will postpone the first season of the Crucible of the Unbroken’s ranking system due to concerns over combat balance and gameplay mechanics. The developer cited feedback highlighting issues that could compromise the fairness of leaderboard results if rankings began under current conditions. The decision reflects an effort to address problems before competitive play resumes. Players have already expressed dissatisfaction with the scoring system’s unintended incentives.
The Crucible’s leaderboard system requires players to complete boards on the highest difficulty tier to qualify for rewards, including a Tourmaline Golem Mount. Only the top few hundred players per region will receive the mount, creating significant pressure to optimize performance. The scoring system awards points for avoiding certain mechanics, such as using only three familiars or skipping campsites and gear upgrades, which conflicts with the mode’s intended depth.
Players have responded by min-maxing strategies to exploit the scoring system, prioritizing point gains over engaging with the mode’s core systems. This approach has led to widespread dissatisfaction, as it strips away the roguelike’s strategic variety and replayability. The mounting frustration risks undermining the mode’s long-term appeal if left unaddressed.
The developer suggested scrapping the mount reward tied to leaderboard placement as a potential solution to reduce min-maxing incentives. Alternative systems, such as Hades’s Heat modifier selection, were cited as examples of how to balance challenge and player agency. The postponement aims to allow time for adjustments that preserve the mode’s intended design and player enjoyment.
