No more Diablo 4 expansions are planned, but there's 'a lot of room' for more storytelling in the lead-up to Diablo 5

Blizzard announced at BlizzCon that Diablo 5 will launch in 2029, set a century after Diablo 4 in a Sanctuary overrun by Diablo himself. The game’s narrative will conclude the Story of Hatred with the defeat of Mephisto, shifting focus to the Story of Terror. Diablo 4’s story will continue through seasonal updates, though no expansions are currently planned.

Diablo game director Brent Gibson stated the team is prioritizing Diablo 4 seasons and the development of Diablo 5. He emphasized the flexibility to adapt the story based on fan reactions, noting the long-term support commitment to Diablo 4 similar to Diablo 2: Resurrected’s ongoing updates.

Gibson clarified that Diablo 4 will receive continued support as long as players engage with it, drawing parallels to Diablo 2: Resurrected’s recent class additions. The approach aims to maintain the Diablo universe’s continuity while evolving plans with community feedback.

While Diablo 5’s setting provides narrative freedom, Gibson acknowledged uncertainty in long-term planning. The team intends to let the story unfold organically through seasons rather than adhering to a rigid template, ensuring adaptability ahead of Diablo 5’s release.
