CBS's Definitive '80s Action Thriller Series Is Officially Free to Watch on Streaming
The 1984 CBS action series Airwolf, featuring a supersonic armed helicopter, is now available to stream for free on The Roku Channel.
Airwolf premiered on CBS in 1984, starring Jan-Michael Vincent as Stringfellow Hawke, a Vietnam veteran and test pilot who operates a secret military helicopter. The show blended Cold War espionage with high-tech fantasy, featuring aerial combat and a shadowy intelligence organization. Ernest Borgnine co-starred as Dominic Santini, Hawke’s mentor, while Alex Cord played Archangel, Hawke’s enigmatic contact. The series balanced brooding drama with lighthearted moments, anchored by the iconic Bell 222 helicopter at its center.
The helicopter itself became the show’s defining character, equipped with fictional supersonic speed, retractable weapons, and a sleek black-and-white design. After the series ended, the original aircraft was stripped of modifications and sold, eventually crashing in 1992. A replica later appeared at the Tennessee Museum of Aviation before being sold to a private collector, who placed it atop a $250 million Bel Air mansion.
The first season of Airwolf stood out for its darker tone, with Hawke refusing to return the helicopter until the government helped find his missing brother. By season two, the show shifted to more conventional episodic adventures, though the helicopter remained the focal point. A revival in 1987 on USA Network replaced the original cast and scaled back production, relying heavily on recycled footage.
Now streaming for free on The Roku Channel, Airwolf offers a nostalgic look at '80s action television, where over-the-top premises and machines defined the era. Despite its uneven later seasons, the series remains a cult favorite for its blend of espionage, fantasy, and sheer spectacle.
