Following through on their warning, Until Dawn and Directive 8020 devs Supermassive lay off "more than 70" staff
Supermassive Games has laid off over 70 staff following redundancy consultations announced in August, citing company sustainability needs after the launch of Directive 8020.
Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, has confirmed layoffs affecting more than 70 employees. The redundancies follow consultations announced in August, which cited a need to ensure the company's sustainability. The studio's latest release, Directive 8020, launched in May to mixed reviews, coinciding with the staff reductions.
A departing employee, Frank Tindle, shared his 16-year journey at Supermassive, rising from IT department head to director and senior leadership team member. Tindle confirmed his role was among those affected, emphasizing the impact on both past and present staff. He also offered to connect departing talent with potential employers, highlighting the breadth of roles leaving the studio.
Another departing leader, Tim Browning, reflected on his tenure since 2022, which involved significant hiring and event participation. His post underscored the scale of recruitment efforts and achievements during his time at Supermassive. The studio's recent focus on adding online multiplayer to Directive 8020 was also noted as part of its ongoing strategy.
The layoffs mark a significant shift for Supermassive, which grew from a small team to over 400 employees during Tindle's tenure. The studio's decision to reduce staff follows a period of expansion and mixed reception for its latest title. Affected employees include developers, artists, producers, QA, and operations staff.
