Announcing Claude Opus 5 on Snowflake Cortex AI
Snowflake has introduced Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 model in public preview on Snowflake Cortex AI, offering enhanced reasoning and coding capabilities for enterprise use cases within Snowflake’s secure environment.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
Snowflake announced the public preview availability of Anthropic’s latest model, Claude Opus 5, as a launch partner, ensuring same-day access within its secure perimeter. The model is integrated with Snowflake CoCo, Cortex Agents, Cortex AI Functions, Cortex Inference, and Snowflake CoWork, enabling enterprise-grade AI workflows. Opus 5 delivers improved performance over its predecessor, Opus 4.8, with adjustable effort settings for optimizing intelligence or token efficiency. It excels in coding, knowledge work, and scientific-research tasks, making it suitable for complex, long-horizon agentic and analytical applications.
The addition of Opus 5 enhances Snowflake CoCo, the AI coding agent, which now supports improved reasoning, code generation, and long-running agentic tasks. CoCo Desktop, available on macOS and Windows, provides developers with an AI workspace that integrates local files, repositories, and terminals while maintaining Snowflake’s governance and RBAC roles. This integration eliminates cold starts and governance gaps, enabling faster development cycles from idea to production without compromising security or scale.
Snowflake CoWork, a personal work agent for knowledge workers, now leverages Opus 5 to extend its capabilities in decomposing complex business questions across structured and unstructured data. The model enables CoWork to return fully cited answers in minutes and proactively surface insights and recommended actions. With enhanced reasoning and consistency in multi-step workflows, CoWork allows employees to delegate complex investigations and drive scalable decision-making within Snowflake’s secure perimeter.
Cortex AI Functions now support Opus 5, enabling enterprises to build scalable AI pipelines across multimodal data using SQL. The AI_COMPLETE function allows analysts to apply natural language instructions directly in SQL, reducing costs compared to manually orchestrated pipelines. This integration supports trusted insights while maintaining Snowflake’s security and governance standards. Enterprises can adopt Opus 5 through multiple entry points, including CoCo CLI, CoWork, Cortex AI Functions, and Cortex Inference, accelerating the deployment of production-ready agentic AI solutions.
