Payments on Solana: September 2026 in Five Stories
Solana’s September payments milestones included Payment Channels, FDIC-insured bank stablecoin integration, and record-breaking stablecoin activity across multiple corridors.
Solana introduced Payment Channels on September 3, allowing agents to authorize a single spending limit and settle payments in bulk rather than per transaction. This reduces settlement complexity for high-frequency, small-value payments. Alibaba Cloud integrated the system on day one, enabling usage without per-call approvals. Testing showed 100,000 wallets processed over a million payments per second, with an estimated cost of $0.000000000776 per payment.
Column, an FDIC-insured bank behind Brex and Slash, embedded stablecoins—USDC and USDT—directly into its core banking ledger in September. This enables 24/7 instant conversion between stablecoins and dollars on Solana, marking a shift from side-ledger partnerships to core integration. The move aims to streamline institutional stablecoin adoption within traditional banking infrastructure.
OUSD launched on Solana at month’s end, issued by Stablecoin on behalf of Open Standard with reserves held at BlackRock, Lead Bank, and BNY. Businesses can mint and burn OUSD 1:1 at no cost via BVNK, Stripe, and Visa’s Stablecoin Platform, consolidating major payment rails from launch. Solana’s dominance in transaction volume continued, capturing 76% of x402 transactions between August 22 and September 19.
Solana processed 1.81 million agent payments in 24 hours on September 2, while stablecoin activity surged. Daily stablecoin active addresses reached 888,000, up 269% year-over-year, and Solana carried 420 million USDC transactions in a month. The network also facilitated 6.2 million unique USDC senders, representing 42% of all USDC senders globally and 2.5 times the next network.
