UC Berkeley and UCSF launch Computational Biomedicine Initiative
UC Berkeley and UCSF have launched the Bakar Computational Biomedicine Initiative to advance AI-driven biomedical research through collaboration, new faculty hires, and an open-source platform.

The Bakar Computational Biomedicine Initiative, a joint program by UC Berkeley and UCSF, aims to accelerate AI applications in biomedicine, focusing on disease prevention, early detection, and new treatments. The initiative will establish new faculty positions, fund postdoctoral researchers, and develop BioJupyter, an open-source computational platform. Leadership includes Yun Song, James Fraser, and Fernando Pérez, who will oversee the program’s strategic direction and collaborative efforts. The partnership seeks to create a leading hub for computational biomedicine by integrating expertise from both universities in computing, AI, and medical research.
UC Berkeley will begin hiring four new faculty members in computational biology this fall, with joint appointments at UCSF. Postdoctoral researchers will also be recruited and mentored collaboratively across both institutions. Jennifer Chayes, Dean of UC Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, emphasized the complementary strengths of the two universities in AI, computing, and medical research. The initiative is expected to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and drive innovation in healthcare solutions.
The initiative will develop BioJupyter, an open-source platform designed to facilitate data sharing and analysis in computational biomedicine. Fernando Pérez, co-inventor of the Jupyter platform, will play a key role in its expansion. The platform aims to connect researchers across UC Berkeley and UCSF, enabling seamless collaboration on biomedical projects. This tool is intended to support the initiative’s goal of accelerating discoveries in disease prevention and treatment.
James Fraser, Chair of UCSF’s Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, highlighted the potential of the initiative to unite talent and technology from both campuses. The program’s focus on postdoctoral fellows and the Jupyter platform is expected to uncover new connections in biomedical data. Fraser emphasized the initiative’s role in advancing healthcare through collaborative research and innovation.
