Bringing clean solar power to communities in Bangladesh
The UK is funding clean solar power projects in Bangladesh to provide reliable electricity to off-grid communities, reduce pollution, and support long-term climate goals through carbon credit financing.
The UK’s International Climate Finance initiative is supporting Bangladesh’s Solar Home System programme, which delivers clean, affordable electricity to rural and off-grid communities. This programme has enabled millions to replace polluting fuels like diesel and kerosene with solar power, improving household energy access. UK funding through the Carbon Initiative for Development (Ci-Dev) programme helps these projects earn income by selling carbon credits, ensuring financial sustainability and continued clean energy provision.
Around 3.3 million solar home systems have been installed in Bangladesh with UK support, addressing frequent power cuts and reducing household energy costs. This initiative has improved clean energy access for more than 10 million people, installed over 340 megawatts of clean energy capacity, and cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 1 million tonnes.
The Ci-Dev programme values long-term, environmentally friendly energy solutions to mitigate climate change by supporting projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By enabling clean energy projects to earn carbon credits, the UK is helping Bangladesh build a sustainable financial model for future energy investments.
UK support also strengthens Bangladesh’s ability to access new financing through carbon markets, ensuring clean energy projects remain viable and continue delivering affordable electricity to communities. This contributes to sustainable development and long-term climate resilience in the country.
