The United Kingdom has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the United Nations to ensure peace operations remain adaptable and effective amid evolving global conflicts. Ambassador Kate Foster, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted the critical role of peacekeepers, including those who have lost their lives in service. The UK welcomed the adoption of Security Council resolution 2823, which strengthens accountability for attacks on UN peacekeepers, underscoring the importance of their safety and security.
Ambassador Foster welcomed the Secretary-General’s Review on the future of UN peacekeeping, noting that peace operations remain vital tools for maintaining international peace and security. She acknowledged that conflicts are growing more complex, internationalized, and influenced by new technologies, requiring peacekeeping missions to adapt continuously to remain effective in their mandates.
The UK emphasized the primacy of politics in peacekeeping, stating that missions are most effective when aligned with clear political strategies, realistic objectives, and credible exit plans. Missions must also retain the flexibility to adapt as circumstances change, ensuring they leave behind conditions for durable peace upon departure.
The UK also supported the Review’s focus on building more focused, adaptable, and high-performing peace operations, prioritizing tasks uniquely suited to peacekeepers. It stressed the importance of aligning mandates, resources, and political goals, maintaining high standards of conduct, and ensuring accountability, including a zero-tolerance approach to sexual exploitation and abuse.
