Rethinking What Freedom of Movement Feels Like for Women
Waymo highlights how autonomous rides can restore agency for women travelers by removing mental burdens tied to safety and control during trips.
Most women prepare for car rides by assessing surroundings, choosing whether to appear occupied, and sharing live locations, adding mental strain to travel. Waymo’s autonomous service removes this hidden labor by letting riders control their environment without compromise. Women report feeling safer and more at ease, with over half of female riders in established markets saying the service improves their sense of personal safety. The shift allows for activities like work calls, silence, or loud music, all on their own terms.
Waymo collaborated with a women-led creative team to produce a film illustrating how autonomous rides can reclaim mental energy for women travelers. The project was directed by Mollie Mills, with cinematography by Autumn Durald, and produced by Onye Anyanwu, Mah Ferraz, and Shakari "Trakgirl" L. The film underscores the importance of rider agency in shaping travel experiences. Waymo emphasizes that women’s perspectives are central to designing services that prioritize choice, comfort, and confidence.
Waymo’s data indicates that more than half of women riders in established service areas feel safer using the autonomous service compared to other transportation options. Riders describe regaining control over their environment, whether through silence, conversation, or music, without fear of judgment or safety concerns. The service’s design reflects feedback from women who value autonomy in their daily routines.
The initiative reflects Waymo’s broader effort to integrate women’s experiences into mobility solutions, recognizing that freedom of movement extends beyond physical travel. By centering women’s voices in service design, Waymo aims to address gaps in transportation equity and comfort. The film and rider testimonials highlight how autonomy can reshape not just journeys, but the emotional labor tied to them.
