METRO 2039, the fourth installment in the METRO series developed by 4A Games, is scheduled for release on Xbox Series X|S and PC in February 2027. The game continues the franchise’s narrative-driven first-person shooter format, set in the irradiated Moscow Metro following a nuclear war. Based on the novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the series blends post-apocalyptic survival with grimdark realism, distinct from Western post-apocalyptic tropes.
A recent two-hour demo highlighted the game’s emphasis on environmental storytelling and tactile gameplay. Players navigate a densely populated Metro station, where NPCs engage in daily routines and dialogue, creating a lived-in atmosphere. The developers describe their design philosophy as 'Frozen Stories,' where every asset reflects prior events, reinforcing immersion. Exploration and survival mechanics are grounded in physical interactions, such as crafting ammunition using a backpack inventory and monitoring radiation levels via a digital watch.
Combat and stealth mechanics emphasize resource scarcity and tactical decision-making. Players must balance finite materials like metal and chemicals for crafting, while avoiding unnecessary conflict. The demo featured encounters with hostile creatures, including bear-sized moles, and a stealth-based infiltration of a bandit hideout, evoking comparisons to *Metal Gear Solid V*. The game’s horror elements were also on display, with a sequence involving ghostly children in a haunted school, reflecting the series’ Stalker-inspired lineage.
The demo concluded with a glimpse of Hunter, the fascist leader opposing the protagonist, whose portrayal reinforces the game’s antifascist themes. 4A Games has acknowledged the influence of the Russian war on Ukraine on the project’s development, integrating these convictions into the narrative. The game’s blend of AAA polish and earnest thematic content left a strong impression, positioning METRO 2039 as a survival experience that prioritizes atmosphere and consequence over spectacle.
