Zapier MCP introduces a secure gateway for AI tools to interact with over 9,000 apps in Zapier’s library, bypassing the need for developers to build custom integrations. The service operates under the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that translates AI requests into app actions, such as sending messages or drafting emails. Users can select specific actions to enable, ensuring AI tools perform only authorized tasks while maintaining security through Zapier’s governance layer, including OAuth and audit logs.
The tool is accessible on all paid Zapier plans, with pricing set at two Zapier tasks per MCP call. It supports code-free setup for non-developers, allowing integration with platforms like Claude or ChatGPT in minutes. For developers, direct invocation is possible via APIs from OpenAI or Anthropic, or through Python and TypeScript, offering greater control over AI interactions and workflow customization.
Zapier MCP includes features like action naming for clarity, AI-assisted field suggestions to streamline setup, and on/off toggles to disable actions without deletion. Admins benefit from a centralized audit log for compliance and troubleshooting, while built-in security measures such as encryption and rate limiting mitigate potential abuse. The service is distinct from AI by Zapier, which embeds AI steps into automated workflows, whereas MCP integrates directly with AI chatbots for real-time app actions.
Enterprise plan users must request access through their account administrator, as MCP is disabled by default. Authentication relies on Zapier’s SOC 2 Type II-compliant systems, with encrypted and rotated keys, eliminating the need for manual API token handling. MCP is currently supported in ChatGPT’s Developer Mode, with additional programmatic options available via APIs or custom code for advanced use cases.
