OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Work, an agentic AI mode enabling autonomous task completion across apps and files without requiring direct code or terminal use.
ChatGPT Work transforms the ChatGPT app by shifting from a conversational chatbot to an autonomous agent capable of operating independently for extended periods. Users provide a goal and context, and the system executes tasks such as generating documents, spreadsheets, or emails while interfacing with third-party apps like Gmail, Google Drive, and Slack. Unlike traditional chatbots, it minimizes back-and-forth dialogue, focusing instead on actionable outcomes. The feature is designed to handle complex workflows without manual intervention, though it pauses to request additional information if needed.
The system operates differently across platforms: the desktop app can access local files and control the computer directly, akin to a user-friendly version of Codex, while the mobile and web apps rely on OpenAI’s servers and support a limited set of actions. ChatGPT Work integrates with over 1,500 services via plugins, expanding to 9,000+ when connected through Zapier. It excels in structured tasks like combining data from spreadsheets into presentations or drafting emails based on documents, though performance varies depending on task complexity.
