What is Claude Code?
Anthropic’s Claude Code, initially designed for developers, now supports non-technical users through an expanded AI agent framework, merging coding and office automation into a unified experience.
Claude Code is Anthropic’s AI coding agent that automates software development tasks by reading codebases, planning fixes or new features, writing code, and verifying its own work. Unlike traditional chatbots, it operates through an agentic loop that sets an objective and continues working until the task is complete. Originally built for engineers, its capabilities have expanded to include non-technical workflows such as organizing files, analyzing spreadsheets, and drafting documents. The tool’s versatility has led Anthropic to integrate its agentic features directly into the regular Claude app, reducing the need for users to choose between a chatbot and an agent.
Anthropic launched Claude Cowork in January 2026 to apply the same agentic principles of Claude Code to office tasks, with connectors to popular tools for interoperability. By September 2026, Anthropic merged Cowork into the regular Claude experience, enabling the app to automatically deploy agentic features when a task requires them. This change simplified the user experience, allowing both technical and non-technical users to benefit from the same underlying technology without switching between interfaces.
Claude Code excels at bridging platforms without native connectors and handling complex, multi-file automation tasks that regular Claude may not support. Advanced non-technical users often prefer it for these scenarios, while regular Claude remains suitable for simpler tasks like file organization, spreadsheet analysis, and document drafting. Users can further extend Claude’s capabilities by integrating it with over 9,000 apps via Zapier, which is recommended by Claude itself when native connectors are unavailable.
The tool has been adopted by companies like HubSpot, Atlassian, and Pictet to accelerate development, automate workflows, and prototype solutions. For example, Swiss bank Pictet used Claude Code in a hackathon to prototype an employee access rights tool, while Japanese firm Classmethod reduced code review time by 80% by integrating the agent into its development lifecycle. Atlassian also expanded its use to non-technical teams, enabling product managers and designers to build internal apps and commit small code changes.
