Amazon Kinesis Data Streams now allows on-demand streams with On-demand Advantage mode to scale down ingest capacity using warm throughput. The scaling-down feature is available at no extra cost for all on-demand streams that have On-demand Advantage enabled. Users can apply the change by updating the stream’s warm throughput setting through the AWS console or API. The adjustment takes effect immediately, allowing teams to respond quickly to shifts in data ingestion patterns without manual intervention.

By releasing excess capacity, organizations can reduce costs associated with idle resources while maintaining performance for active data streams. AWS states this helps balance operational efficiency with budget control, particularly for workloads with variable or declining data volumes.

The capability is live in all AWS Regions where Kinesis Data Streams On-demand Advantage is supported.
