Amazon OpenSearch Service now supports OpenSearch version 3.7, introducing vector search optimizations, improved search relevance tools, and enhanced Query Insights for performance analysis.

Key points
·
You can now run OpenSearch version 3.7 on Amazon OpenSearch Service.
·
OpenSearch 3.7 presents improvements in vector search performance, search relevance, and Query Insights.
·
With this launch, 1-bit scalar quantization on the Faiss and Lucene engines compresses vectors, reducing the storage and memory required by vector workloads while maintaining search accuracy.
·
You can now retrieve vectors faster using doc values instead of document source, with no reindexing required.

Amazon Web Services announced that OpenSearch version 3.7 is now available on Amazon OpenSearch Service. The update includes performance improvements for vector search, with 1-bit scalar quantization reducing storage and memory requirements for vector workloads while preserving accuracy. Users can also retrieve vectors faster using doc values without needing to reindex existing data.

The new version introduces enhancements to Search Relevance Workbench, including additional evaluation metrics, CSV judgment uploads, and expanded hybrid search optimization tools. These features aim to help users measure and improve search quality more effectively. The workbench supports iterative refinement of search algorithms based on performance data.

OpenSearch 3.7 adds new Query Insights capabilities, such as automated query recommendations to identify optimization opportunities. A finished-queries cache allows observation of recently completed queries, while the option to export top query data to Amazon S3 enables trend analysis over time. These tools assist administrators in diagnosing performance bottlenecks.

The update is available in all AWS Regions where Amazon OpenSearch Service operates. Users can upgrade to OpenSearch 3.7 by following the documented migration process. AWS provides guidance on compatibility and configuration changes required for the upgrade.
