AWS Elemental MediaTailor adds configurable ad timeout and concurrency controls for improved ad fill and faster startup
AWS Elemental MediaTailor now allows users to configure ad server timeout and concurrency settings directly, eliminating the need to contact AWS Support for adjustments.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
AWS Elemental MediaTailor has introduced configurable ad decision server (ADS) timeout settings, previously only adjustable via AWS Support. Users can now set individual HTTP request timeouts, total ad personalization time budgets for live, VOD, and live ad prefetch, and enable parallel ADS requests. These changes aim to optimize ad delivery performance tailored to specific workflows, such as increasing time budgets for live events to improve ad fill rates or enabling parallel requests in VOD workflows to reduce response times. The updates provide finer control over ad retrieval for livestreams through new prefetch-specific timeout settings.
The new capabilities are accessible via the AWS Elemental MediaTailor console, AWS CLI, or AWS SDKs using the AdsPersonalizationTimeouts and AdsPersonalizationConcurrency parameters. These parameters can be applied to playback configurations, offering flexibility in managing ad delivery without requiring external support. The feature is available across all AWS Regions where AWS Elemental MediaTailor operates, ensuring broad accessibility for existing and new users.
Previously, adjusting ad server timeouts required manual intervention through AWS Support, which could delay workflow optimizations. The direct configuration options now streamline the process, allowing users to implement changes immediately. This shift reduces operational overhead and enables faster iteration on ad delivery strategies, particularly for time-sensitive live events or high-volume VOD services.
For users managing ad personalization in live or VOD environments, the new settings provide granular control over ad server interactions. The ability to fine-tune timeouts and concurrency levels can lead to improved ad fill rates and reduced latency during video startup. Documentation in the AWS Elemental MediaTailor User Guide outlines how to configure these advanced settings for optimal performance.
