AMD to Acquire World Labs to Advance the Future of AI Compute
AMD agreed to acquire AI research lab World Labs, led by Dr. Fei-Fei Li, for approximately $8.2 billion to strengthen its AI hardware and software development capabilities.
AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, an AI model and research lab led by Dr. Fei-Fei Li, for approximately $8.2 billion. The acquisition aims to enhance AMD’s ability to develop AI hardware, software, and systems tailored to emerging AI workloads. World Labs specializes in spatial-intelligence models that generate and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, image, and video inputs, as well as robotic learning technologies. The deal is structured as an all-stock transaction and is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approvals and customary conditions.
Dr. Lisa Su, AMD’s chair and CEO, emphasized the need for deep understanding of evolving AI models to build next-generation compute platforms. She stated that World Labs’ research leadership and model expertise will help shape AMD’s future technology roadmaps and strengthen the open AI ecosystem. The acquisition aligns with AMD’s strategy to deliver AI infrastructure across diverse applications, including reasoning, robotics, and simulation.
Dr. Fei-Fei Li, co-founder and CEO of World Labs, highlighted the importance of collaboration between model research, systems, and compute in advancing AI technology. She noted that joining AMD will provide the team with additional resources and engineering depth to accelerate research and define the infrastructure required for the next era of AI.
Following the transaction’s completion, the World Labs team will continue focusing on AI model research, and Dr. Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to Dr. Lisa Su. World Labs is headquartered in San Francisco and develops advanced spatial-intelligence and robotic learning technologies.
