Factory and Atlassian have introduced a direct integration between Factory’s Droid coding agent and Jira, allowing teams to invoke the agent from a Jira work item. Droid autonomously executes engineering tasks in a selected environment and writes results back to the same Jira issue, streamlining workflows. This marks the first time a coding agent can be triggered and managed entirely within Jira, eliminating the need to switch between tools or manually re-enter context. The integration is designed to keep Jira as the central system of record for both planning and execution.

The new capability originated from an enterprise customer in a regulated industry seeking to build a software factory in a controlled environment. The customer collaborated with Factory and Atlassian to develop the integration, which uses Factory’s Forge Remote Agent for Jira. This agent operates under the A2A protocol and is currently available for Jira Cloud customers with Rovo enabled. The Forge Remote Agent ensures secure, model-independent execution while maintaining enterprise control over compute environments and AI models.

To use Droid in Jira, engineers invoke the agent via Rovo Chat from a Jira issue. On the first use, they configure settings such as the compute environment, model preferences, and service accounts, which can be saved as defaults for future tasks. Subsequent runs allow Droid to execute autonomously with the preconfigured settings, reducing setup time and improving consistency. The integration is designed to minimize manual intervention while preserving Jira as the single source of truth for development work.

Beyond the Droid integration, Jira Automation now supports triggering external coding agents like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude as part of automated workflows. Teams can set conditions to automatically hand off work to these agents, ensuring tasks are executed without losing context. This feature complements the Droid integration by providing additional flexibility for AI-driven development within Jira’s ecosystem.
