Babcock and Supacat to collaborate on Light Mobility Vehicle programme

Babcock International and Supacat have agreed to collaborate on the Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) programme, which aims to replace the British Army’s Land Rover fleet. The partnership follows the recent completion of the Jackal 3 programme and will utilise Babcock’s General Logistics Vehicle (GLV) family, built on the Toyota Land Cruiser LC70 platform. The GLV range includes Medium Wheelbase, Long Wheelbase, and Utility variants designed for operational flexibility and cost efficiency.
The Memorandum of Understanding formalises the collaboration, allowing both companies to combine their expertise in vehicle design and manufacturing. Babcock’s GLV is positioned as a sovereign capability solution, supported by a UK-based supply chain to enhance operational dependability and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. The partnership aligns with Babcock’s SME Engagement Charter, reinforcing its commitment to working with smaller defence contractors.
Louise Atkinson, Chief Executive of Babcock’s Land and Mission Systems sector, emphasised the need for a practical, safe, and innovative light mobility vehicle. She highlighted the GLV’s affordability, supportability, and operational effectiveness, while stressing the importance of a strong UK supply chain to sustain sovereign defence capabilities.
Phil Applegarth, Director at Supacat, underscored the long-standing relationship between the two companies, citing the Jackal 3 programme as a successful example of collaboration. He expressed confidence that their combined expertise in vehicle design and manufacturing would deliver a best-in-class solution for the British Army under the LMV programme.
