The Bank of England’s Court, which oversees strategy, governance, and risk, will welcome five new non-executive directors following a competitive selection process. The appointments aim to strengthen the Court’s independent judgment and broaden its expertise in financial markets, investment management, and corporate governance. The successful candidates were chosen after a fair and open competition conducted under the Governance Code on Public Appointments, ensuring transparency in the selection process.

Among the appointees is Paul Nowak, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, who brings extensive experience in international labour representation and non-executive roles at Unity Trust Bank. Hanneke Smits, with 34 years in investment management including leadership roles at BNY Investment Management, brings deep experience in asset management and corporate governance. Her prior service on the Court of the Bank of England and roles at major foundations further enhance the Court’s strategic and ethical oversight capabilities.
