Statistical Notice 2026/08
The Bank of England is revising criteria for monthly Form BT reporting, aligning it with specified monthly Money and Credit statistical returns to reduce reporting burden while maintaining statistical quality.
The Bank of England has announced changes to the criteria determining which firms must submit Form BT monthly. Under the revised rules, firms already required to submit specified monthly Money and Credit statistical returns will generally also need to file Form BT monthly. This adjustment aims to streamline reporting obligations by consolidating related requirements for affected institutions. Firms not meeting these criteria will continue submitting Form BT quarterly, unless instructed otherwise by the Bank. All banks and building societies with deposit-taking licences must submit Form BT at least quarterly, regardless of other reporting obligations.
The Bank periodically reviews reporting populations to ensure the burden remains proportionate while meeting statistical quality standards. Following the latest review, the criteria for monthly Form BT reporting have been updated. Some firms currently submitting Form BT monthly will transition to quarterly reporting under the new rules. The Bank will publish updated reporting thresholds guidance to reflect these changes, which will be available on its website for public reference.
The Bank retains discretion to require monthly Form BT submissions from firms even if they do not meet the revised criteria. Affected firms will receive individual notifications confirming any changes to their reporting requirements and the effective date of those changes. The updated guidance will also outline the notice periods applicable when reporting requirements are adjusted, with shorter notice periods possible for removing monthly reporting obligations.
Queries regarding the notice or its implementation should be directed to the Bank’s Money and Credit Group via email. The Bank will provide further details on the revised reporting thresholds and notice periods through its official channels. Firms are advised to review the updated guidance to understand how the changes may impact their reporting obligations.
