A robot is tested with a view to enhancing security on CERN’s sites
CERN’s Security Service began testing an autonomous security robot on 22 July 2026 to monitor the Meyrin and Prévessin sites during a four-month trial.
CERN’s Security Service initiated a trial on 22 July 2026 to assess the effectiveness of an autonomous robot for perimeter security at the Meyrin and Prévessin sites. The two-wheeled robot, equipped with 360° cameras, thermal imaging, and acoustic sensors, patrols at speeds up to 5 km/h and operates for approximately eight hours before recharging automatically. Its primary function is to identify security anomalies such as damaged fencing or unauthorized objects near the perimeter, triggering immediate alerts to the Access Control Centre (CSA) for rapid response by security personnel.
The trial covers a combined perimeter of 10.4 km across the Meyrin (4.9 km) and Prévessin (5.5 km) sites, with the robot programmed to detect specific security concerns during its patrols. Potential additional applications include monitoring external doors left open outside working hours, expanding the robot’s role beyond perimeter checks. The robot’s deployment aims to enhance situational awareness and support existing security measures through automated surveillance.
CERN has requested that individuals refrain from interfering with the robot during its patrols to ensure uninterrupted operation, though polite greetings are permitted. The robot is designed to respond to interactions, allowing for brief exchanges with staff or visitors while maintaining its assigned duties. This trial represents an exploratory step in integrating robotic assistance into CERN’s security protocols.
The four-month testing period will conclude in November 2026, after which CERN’s Security Service will evaluate the robot’s performance and determine whether to extend or expand its use. Findings from the trial will inform decisions on further applications, such as additional detection capabilities or integration with other security systems. The initiative reflects CERN’s ongoing efforts to leverage technology for operational efficiency and safety.
