Key points
·
Cloudflare is fastest in 74% of the top 1,000 networks, up from 60% in April 2026, per APNIC-ranked networks.
·
Challenge Pages, delivered via Turnstile, now supplement error-page measurements to capture real-user connection times across more networks.
·
Performance rankings use trimean of TCP handshake times, reducing outlier impact while reflecting typical user experiences.

Cloudflare states it is now the fastest provider in 74% of the 1,000 largest networks globally, an increase of 14 percentage points from April 2026. The company attributes this to additional measurements from Cloudflare-branded error pages and a new methodology using Cloudflare Challenge Pages. These pages, delivered via Turnstile, allow background performance checks without user interaction, capturing real-world connection times across diverse networks and geographies.

The improvement reflects data collected from the largest networks ranked by estimated user population using APNIC figures. Performance is evaluated using connection time—the duration for a TCP handshake—with rankings based on the trimean of connection times across the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles. This metric accounts for distance, routing, and congestion while minimizing the impact of outliers, providing a more representative view of user experience.

Cloudflare introduced Challenge Pages to expand measurement reach beyond error scenarios, capturing performance during everyday interactions where challenges are already served. These pages run lightweight background tests fetching files from Cloudflare, Amazon CloudFront, Google, Fastly, and Akamai, recording completion times without adding noticeable latency or compromising privacy. The initial sampling is limited to free Challenge Pages to ensure end-user performance remains unaffected.

The new methodology increases data volume and diversity, enabling more granular analysis such as weighting performance by user traffic or grouping results by country. Early results show sharper resolution in close races, where providers are separated by milliseconds, reducing statistical noise. Cloudflare plans to expand sampling only if it improves measurement quality without impacting user experience, aiming to further refine performance rankings and insights.
