Making compliance simpler: opening up the FCA Handbook through our new API
The UK Financial Conduct Authority launched a Handbook API to simplify regulatory compliance by enabling structured, machine-readable access to its rules and guidance.
The FCA Handbook API allows software systems to retrieve and integrate regulatory content directly, reducing manual processes for firms. This structured, machine-readable format replaces reliance on websites and monthly downloads, offering a more efficient way to access rules, guidance and updates. Firms can now embed Handbook data into their existing compliance tools or tailor integrations to their specific needs. The API supports direct access, custom integrations for in-house teams, or third-party solutions from RegTech providers, ensuring flexibility across different compliance approaches.
Previously, firms accessed Handbook content through static websites or specialist tools, which required manual effort to track changes and apply updates. The API automates data retrieval, enabling systems to pull structured content and incorporate it into workflows without manual intervention. This shift aligns with the FCA’s goal of becoming a smarter regulator in a digital environment. The API complements the refreshed Handbook website, which introduced advanced search, track changes tools and improved context-setting last year.
The initiative aims to reduce the administrative burden on firms while maintaining regulatory standards. By streamlining access to Handbook content, the API helps firms focus resources on delivering consumer outcomes and supporting market innovation. Technology providers and developers are encouraged to build tools that leverage the API to enhance compliance efficiency. The FCA emphasises that while technology cannot replace compliance responsibilities, it can significantly ease the process of managing regulatory change.
Firms, developers and technology providers are invited to explore the Handbook API and provide feedback on its use. The FCA will monitor how the API is adopted to inform future regulatory tools and processes. Detailed guidance on accessing and using the API is available in the FCA’s FAQs. This move reflects the regulator’s commitment to modernising financial services regulation through accessible, data-driven solutions.
