Firefly Aerospace announced a $144 million NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) contract to deliver a rapid lunar mission using its Blue Ghost lander, aiming for a 2028 launch. The mission will target the Moon’s near side, similar to Firefly’s first lunar landing, and carry three NASA science instruments. The Laser Retroreflector Array (LRA) will enable precision laser ranging, while the Linear Energy Transfer Spectrometer (LETS) will measure radiation levels. The Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume Surface Studies (SCALPSS) will analyze plume-surface interactions during touchdown. These instruments will provide critical data for future lunar exploration and infrastructure development.

Firefly’s CEO, Jason Kim, emphasized the mission’s role in proving commercial lunar delivery as rapid, repeatable, and reliable. The company has expanded its growth strategy from one annual Moon landing to multiple missions per year, utilizing its mature lander design and expanded production capacity. Firefly is integrating flight data from its first mission to optimize thermal systems and operational procedures, enabling faster production cycles without extensive redesign between missions.

The company’s upcoming lunar missions include deliveries to the Moon’s far side, Gruithuisen Domes, and south pole, alongside a subcontract to deliver NASA’s MoonFall drones above the lunar south pole. All vehicles will be built and assembled at Firefly’s new spacecraft facility near Austin, Texas, supporting a robust production line for lunar landers and orbital vehicles. Firefly, established in 2017, continues to focus on responsive space missions and vertical integration for its launch vehicles and landers.
