Firefly Aerospace Onboarded to NASA Spacecraft Processing Operations Contract
NASA awarded Firefly Aerospace a contract to compete for payload processing services at Vandenberg Space Force Base, enabling faster mission preparations for government and commercial launches.
NASA has awarded Firefly Aerospace a Spacecraft Processing Operations Contract, allowing the company to bid on task orders for payload processing facilities and services at Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB). The contract positions Firefly to support NASA missions by providing commercial payload processing, fueling, integration, and encapsulation services prior to launch. This initiative aims to address industry bottlenecks by offering a dedicated facility near Space Launch Complex 2 on the north end of VSFB.
Firefly’s Payload Processing Facility (PPF), located within 0.5 miles of its launch site, is designed to handle small and medium-size payloads as well as hypergolic spacecraft. The facility includes a storage area, control room, workspace, airlock, and an ISO 8 cleanroom, enabling comprehensive pre-launch preparations. Under the contract, Firefly will compete for task orders to provide these services to NASA, supporting missions such as those for the Quicksounder and INCUS satellites.
Adam Oakes, Vice President of Launch at Firefly Aerospace, highlighted the company’s role in alleviating critical bottlenecks in the industry. He emphasized that reliable access to space requires not only rockets but also the infrastructure to prepare payloads efficiently. Oakes noted that Firefly’s facility helps accelerate the timeline between payload arrival and liftoff for both government and commercial customers.
The contract reinforces Firefly’s growing launch infrastructure and its position as a trusted provider for NASA’s mission portfolio. It complements existing launch agreements, including missions slated to launch on Firefly’s Alpha rocket. The company, established in 2017, operates engineering, manufacturing, and test facilities in central Texas, supporting its small- to medium-lift launch vehicles, lunar landers, and orbital vehicles.
