Firefly Aerospace Awarded Contract to Design Elytra Deorbit System for Defense Innovation Unit

Firefly Aerospace announced a contract with the Department of War’s Defense Innovation Unit and Space Development Agency to complete a preliminary design review for a deorbit mission using its Elytra spacecraft. The agreement positions Firefly to compete for subsequent phases, including launch and operations, following successful review completion. The mission aligns with federal priorities to reduce orbital debris by enabling controlled deorbiting of satellites nearing end of life. Elytra’s system is designed to handle varying satellite sizes and orbits, offering a scalable solution to a growing space debris challenge.

Under the mission plan, Elytra would launch into low Earth orbit, maneuver to the target satellite, conduct proximity operations, and execute the deorbit service. The spacecraft’s proprietary deorbit system is capable of operating in low Earth, medium Earth, and geostationary orbits. Firefly is also contracted separately with the Defense Innovation Unit for a space domain awareness mission, scheduled no earlier than 2027, with integration and testing phases underway.

Elytra’s design leverages flight-proven components from Firefly’s launch vehicles and lunar landers, including avionics, composite structures, and propulsion systems tested during the Blue Ghost lunar mission. The spacecraft features high-thrust maneuverability, substantial fuel reserves, and payload capacity, enabling responsive in-space services such as payload delivery, communications, surveillance, and lunar imaging. These capabilities support both commercial and defense applications in rapidly evolving orbital environments.

Firefly Aerospace, established in 2017, operates engineering and manufacturing facilities in central Texas, focusing on small- to medium-lift launch vehicles, lunar landers, and orbital vehicles.
