Department of Energy Selects Form Energy for $150M to Build Out West Virginia Battery Factory
The U.S. Department of Energy awarded Form Energy up to $150 million to expand a West Virginia battery factory, supporting production of iron-air batteries and creating up to 750 jobs by 2027.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains selected Form Energy for an award negotiation of up to $150 million under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing program. The funding will support Project RAPID, which aims to install and operate a new manufacturing line at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, West Virginia, with an annual production capacity of up to 20 GWh by 2027.
Project RAPID will accelerate the hiring and training of a permanent domestic workforce of up to 600 employees, part of Form Energy’s broader commitment to create 750 jobs in West Virginia. The company plans to recruit from the local skilled labor pool and develop training programs in partnership with West Virginia Northern Community College and the JD Rockefeller Career Center.
Form Energy is entering into a community benefits agreement with the City of Weirton and investing in local educational institutions as part of its community engagement efforts. The company is also establishing an internal upskilling academy and partnering with the Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley to provide support services for its workforce.
The factory is located on a historic 55-acre site in Weirton, where the former Weirton Steel Corporation once employed over 12,000 workers. Project RAPID has received support from Congressional members across the tri-state region, including Senators Shelley Moore Capito, Joe Manchin, and Sherrod Brown, as well as local leaders like Weirton City Manager Mike Adams.
