Form Energy and FuturEnergy Ireland Announce Agreement To Deploy First Iron-Air Battery Storage Project In Ireland
Form Energy and FuturEnergy Ireland will deploy Ireland’s first 10 MW / 1,000 MWh iron-air battery storage system by 2029 to support grid reliability and Ireland’s 2030 clean energy targets.

Form Energy and FuturEnergy Ireland have agreed to install a 10 MW / 1,000 MWh iron-air battery system in northwest Ireland, marking Form Energy’s first international deployment. The project aims to demonstrate how multi-day energy storage can enhance grid reliability and affordability while supporting Ireland’s clean energy objectives. Scheduled for 2029, the system will be the first of its kind in Ireland and a significant step toward meeting the country’s electricity storage needs.
The agreement was formalized during a ceremony at Form Energy’s headquarters in Somerville, Massachusetts, attended by Irish and U.S. officials, including Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee. The Irish government’s 2024 Electricity Storage Policy Framework identifies long-duration storage as essential for a clean and reliable grid by 2030, citing benefits such as reduced renewable energy waste and lower generation costs.
Form Energy’s technology uses iron, water, and air to store energy at a lower cost than conventional batteries, with potential annual savings exceeding 25% in Ireland’s energy portfolio. The 100-hour battery system is designed to address grid congestion and renewable energy curtailment while strengthening energy independence. FuturEnergy Ireland CEO Peter Lynch highlighted the technology’s modularity and scalability as key advantages for Ireland’s energy transition.
The project reflects years of collaboration between Form Energy and FuturEnergy Ireland, with support from Massachusetts officials and the state’s clean technology initiatives. Form Energy has expanded its manufacturing and project pipeline, including large-scale storage agreements with Xcel Energy and Google, while FuturEnergy Ireland continues to develop wind and storage projects to meet Ireland’s 80% clean electricity target by 2030.
