BMW Group receives prestigious technology award for Gen6 high-voltage battery in China

The BMW Group received the Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology award at the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Congress in Haikou, China, for its Gen6 high-voltage battery. The recognition highlights the battery’s key technologies, including new BMW round cells with a high-nickel cathode, and the company’s holistic approach to electric drive development. The award underscores BMW’s standing as the only non-Chinese automaker to earn one of the congress’s top technology honors this year.

BMW’s Gen6 high-voltage battery integrates new round cells, an 800-volt architecture, and in-house developed Energy Master hardware and software. The design eliminates module structures, using a cell-to-pack approach to maximize energy density and installation efficiency. Safety features include steel-housed cells with integrated mechanisms, multi-stage insulation, and comprehensive thermal and energy management systems.

The Gen6 battery system, a core technology of BMW’s Neue Klasse, enables bidirectional charging and is compatible with both 400-volt and 800-volt infrastructure. Its Energy Master unit manages energy flow, power distribution, and data interfaces, ensuring efficient and safe operation. The system’s flexibility allows integration of future cell technologies while maintaining high safety and performance standards.

The award presentation took place during the WNEVC, a leading global platform for electromobility discussions. This marks the sixth time BMW Group has been recognized by the congress, including five consecutive years of innovation awards. The Gen6 battery reflects BMW’s in-house expertise across the entire value chain, from cell chemistry to vehicle integration.
