BMW Group Plant Woodruff in South Carolina will begin series production of high-voltage batteries for the new fully-electric BMW iX5 in December 2026. The plant integrates AI-supported processes, digital twins, and virtual reality applications to set new industry standards for battery assembly. Production combines advanced technology with employee expertise to achieve high-quality output. The facility plays a key role in expanding BMW’s electromobility presence in the US.
The Gen6 high-voltage battery uses cylindrical round cells integrated via the 'cell-to-pack' principle, with all production steps monitored inline and documented in real time. AI assistants and over 300 employees, supported by 250 robots, ensure zero-defect manufacturing. Artificial intelligence also enhances Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) in production. Digital twins and VR training replicate the plant’s production lines, allowing employees to practice operations before using actual systems.
Construction of Plant Woodruff began in September 2023, with equipment installation starting in September 2024. Preparations for production started in summer 2025, and test batteries have been produced since then. The plant demonstrates rapid scaling of battery production, supported by a skilled workforce and production network collaboration. The Gen6 battery cells include a high proportion of secondary materials, reducing CO₂e emissions by around 28 percent per watt-hour compared to Gen5 cells.
The high-voltage batteries are assembled at five new facilities near vehicle plants under BMW’s 'local for local' principle, including locations in Germany, China, Mexico, and Hungary. Batteries from Woodruff will be transported to Plant Spartanburg, 15 miles away, for installation in the BMW iX5. The vehicle features sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology with 800-volt technology and an available energy content of 144 kWh in the US.
