BMW Group Plant Munich has started series production of the new BMW i3, following strong early demand that prompted a rapid ramp-up schedule. Orders opened in mid-June, with the plant responding by accelerating manufacturing to meet customer interest. The model is the second in BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup, following the recently introduced Neue Klasse sedan. Jochen Goller, BMW AG board member for Customer, Brands and Sales, highlighted the model’s popularity as a key driver of this early momentum.
The launch of the BMW i3 at Plant Munich signals a new phase for the historic facility, which has produced over nine million BMW 3 Series vehicles since 1975. Raymond Wittmann, BMW AG board member for Production, emphasized the plant’s central role in the brand’s identity and its importance to the global production network. The transition to electric-only production at Munich by 2027 is supported by a €1 billion investment in new infrastructure, including a body shop and assembly hall, completed during ongoing operations.
Plant Munich has reduced manufacturing costs by 10% with the start of BMW i3 production, achieved through advanced planning, supplier collaboration, and modern production technologies. Peter Weber, head of the Munich plant, noted that efficiency gains stem from optimized processes, automation, and the Neue Klasse’s modular vehicle architecture. The site now operates with enhanced flexibility and digital integration, positioning it for future electric vehicle models.
The BMW i3’s production is supported by a regional supply chain, including sixth-generation high-voltage batteries from BMW Group Plant Irlbach-Straßkirchen and Gen6 electric motors from BMW Group Plant Steyr. These components are manufactured using advanced quality controls, digital twins, and AI-driven processes. The Munich plant’s transformation aligns with BMW’s iFACTORY vision, focusing on efficiency, sustainability, and digitalization to strengthen global production resilience.
