Bloomsbury Institute's student sponsor licence revoked

The Bloomsbury Institute, a London-based higher education provider, has had its licence to sponsor international students revoked by the UK Home Office. The decision follows its failure to meet the annual Basic Compliance Assessment thresholds, which require a visa refusal rate below 10%, an enrolment rate of at least 90%, and a course completion rate of at least 85%. The assessment was conducted under pre-June 2026 standards, though the institute would also have failed the stricter rules introduced on 1 June 2026.

The Home Office stated that the institute’s non-compliance constituted a serious breach of its duties as a student sponsor, prompting the revocation on 5 August. The institute has been removed from the Register of Student Sponsors and can no longer admit new international students under the Student Route. The Home Office emphasised its commitment to minimising disruption for existing students enrolled at the institute.

Current sponsored students will not be immediately affected and may continue their studies for a limited period. A small number of students who cannot complete their courses within this timeframe will be supported to transfer to another institution. Those who choose not to transfer must apply for an alternative visa or leave the UK. The Home Office will coordinate with the Bloomsbury Institute, the Department for Education, the Office for Students, and sector bodies throughout the process.

Students not on a Student Visa, including domestic students and international students with other permissions, are unaffected by the revocation. The Home Office will provide further guidance for affected students, who can also seek support directly from the Bloomsbury Institute. All institutions sponsoring international students must pass the annual Basic Compliance Assessment, with failure resulting in enforcement action, including licence revocation.
